Keeping you entertained while I’m on vaction: I worked for DVF.

When I graduated college in May 2009, I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do.  I had a Bachelor of Science degree and my major was Fashion Industry Management.  The economy was bad and jobs were scarce.  I had actually started applying to jobs months in advance, but to no avail.  It was pretty tiring and slightly depressing.
My biggest saving grace was that my school had an online career site where jobs were posted and students could apply directly.  When I saw that there was a position available at Diane von Furstenberg, I flipped!  For those of you who don’t know, DVF is a high-end fashion company.  The clothing is gorgeous and expensive.
Oh, and this girl supposedly worked there:
Whitney Port from The City
So I applied, had an interview and got the job!
My internship took place in New York City.  Because I’m from New Jersey it was obviously hard for me to get there easily.  Luckily, my aunt lived in North Jersey so on Sunday nights I’d go up to stay with her until Tuesday night.  The traveling was pretty brutal.  I’d drive 2 hours to get to my aunt’s on Sunday nights.  Then Monday mornings I’d take a bus into the city and then back at night.  Then on Tuesday mornings I’d drive to a closer bus location, into the city, back and then to South Jersey.  It was a whirlwind!
The internship itself was…interesting.  My boss wasn’t the friendliest and I was the only production intern on the days I worked.  So that meant a lot of alone time and almost everyone that worked there didn’t speak English.  The room that I worked in was poorly lit and pretty dirty.  And the tasks I was given were pretty pointless and menial. Oh, and did I mention it was unpaid? Not exactly the glamorous setting I was imagining!
When I would go to the downtown location though, I was in heaven.  There were tons of girls my age there and the office was beautifully decorated and lit.  This was the main office where Diane herself worked so it made sense.
I worked there from August-Decemeber and those were the longest months!  I quickly began dreading every Sunday night when I knew I’d have to start work and praying for Tuesday nights when my internship week ended.  It was pretty disappointing because I had anticipated this for so long.
Oh and no one talked about Whitney or The City.
It was however, a great experience.  I became very city savy and loved being in New York.  I learned what I didn’t want and that the fashion industry is not all about the glitz and glamour.  It may have been tough but I’m appreciative of the opportunity and my time spent at DVF.
It seems that I lot of people are interested in working for DVF as I’ve seen a lot of search results for this topic on my blog.  If you have any specific questions I’d be more than happy to answer them!  My email: allieatfood@gmail.com

  1. its funny because everyone seems to fantasize about working in NYC in fashion, but I always hear these kind of stories where the people are just unhappy. Congrats on getting the internship (afterall that is a big accomplishment!) but sorry that you hated it :[ NYC is tons of fun though!

  2. Wow, sounds like it was quite a tiring experience! That is totally not how I would have pictured an internship there. What an amazing experience to actually get that internship though! wow! That says a lot about you and your resume! 🙂
